Eskom said it is highly probable that Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 to 24:00 TODAY.

sTAGE 2 LOAD SHEDDING COULD START AT 16:00

This comes after the power utility announced that Stage 2 load shedding on Tuesday.

Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha said it is also highly probable that this will continue on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Eskom cautions the public that due to the shortage of generation capacity, Stage 2 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 to 24:00 this evening. There is also a high probability that load shedding will require to be implemented during the same time on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings,” he said.

He said the power utility would communicate should anything change.

“The breakdowns of a single generation unit at Arnot Power Station and three at Tutuka Power Station during the last 24 hours, as well as the delays in returning units to service at Arnot, Kusile and Tuktuka power stations, have put a severe strain on the power generation system.

“We currently have 4 550 MW on planned maintenance, while another 14 182 MW of unavailable due to breakdowns. We, therefore, urge all South Africans to continue using electricity sparingly.”

The load shedding comes amid icy weather and more snowfall expected in several parts of South Africa on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to VoxWeather a new layer of SNOW is expected to fall on Wednesday over the mountains of the Western Cape, Karoo and Sutherland; spreading to the Eastern Cape mountains into Thursday.

Significant snow is expected over Lesotho and the southern Drakensberg mainly on Thursday into Friday

WARNING OF COLD WEATHER FOR REST OF WEEK

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a weather advisory.

“Angora and small stock farmers are advised to shelter small stock until Monday. Hikers and outdoor recreational activities will be exposed to these conditions and may contract Hypothermia if precautions are not taken.”

It furthermore warned of slippery roads resulting in minor accidents along the mountain passes.

RAMAPHOSA URGED SOUTH AFRICANS TO GET ROOFTOP SOLAR

President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier this month said they intend to enable businesses and households to invest in rooftop solar to generate electricity.

He said South Africa has a great abundance of sun that should be used to generate electricity.

“There is significant potential for households and businesses to install rooftop solar and connect this power to the grid.

“To incentivise greater uptake of rooftop solar, Eskom will develop rules and a pricing structure – known as a feed-in tariff – for all commercial and residential installations on its network.”
