Sridevi: South Africans and the world react to Bollywood star’s death

South Africans and the rest of the world are taking social media by storm as they mourn the sudden loss of one of Bollywood’s biggest stars.

The death of one of the biggest names in Bollywood cinema has left fans of her films all around the world in a state of shock this weekend. Sridevi Kapoor has died at the age of 54.

After reports of her death began to make their way online, the star’s death was eventually confirmed by family. She was attending her nephew’s wedding when she passed on.

Sridevi was a life-long actor after playing her first role at just four-years-old. She was best known for Bollywood blockbusters such as Chandni, Mr India, Mawali and Tohfa.

The star had also previously received one of the highest civilian awards in India, the Padma Shri, for her work in the film industry.

Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi had nothing but praise for the iconic actress.

“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief.”

Other Bollywood stars also paid their respects through social media.

With Bollywood films being such a huge part of life for many South Africans, there has been a local outpour of shock and sadness.

Sridevi is survived by her two daughters, Jhanvi and Kushi.
