Authorities in Springs, Ekurhuleni, have issued an all-points-bulletin (APB) for four prisoners who brazenly slipped away from police custody, on Wednesday.

Springs jailbreak: Police warn Ekurhuleni public about these escapees

As reported by Sowetan, witnesses revealed that a number of heavily armed men allegedly entered the Springs Magistrate’s Court and apparently ‘kidnapped’ four suspects who are linked to a contract killing.

There are conflicting reports on whether a SAPS officer was attacked during this ‘prison heist’. However, one thing is clear, the incident was carefully planned.

Mbongiseni Langa, Mduduzi Sithole, Mzwanele Mbatha and Phumlani Tshabalala appeared at the Springs Magistrate’s Court to stand accused alongside Nonhlanhla Matiwane, a woman believed to be the mastermind behind the murder of her 42-year-old husband, Sibusiso Mthombothi.

It’s reported that the court appearance was brief and just before the prisoners were about to be transported back to jail, the armed men entered the court through the back and ‘kidnapped’ the suspects.

Images of the prison escapees have been leaked on social media and interestingly, it includes Matiwane. It is not clear, at this stage, if the accused widow also masterminded this grand escape but according to sources that spoke to the cited publication, “the armed men failed to take Matiwane after they attempted to drag her to their vehicle.”

No arrests have been reported at this time and the whereabouts of Matiwane have not yet been confirmed. Authorities have urged the Springs public to avoid confronting the suspects as they may be armed and dangerous. Instead, police are pleading with anyone who has information on this escape to contact SAPS at 08600 10 111.
