Crime stats released

The crime statistics for March 2017 – March 2018 will be released later on Tuesday. We’ll find out what direction our country is headed in, and whether Fikile Mbalulas’ brief reign as minister of police yielded any positive results. [Read more: TimesLive]

Remembering 9/11

Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, which accounted for the deaths of more than 3 000 people. Two South Africans – Nicholas Charles Alexander Rowe, who was 28 when he died, and Craig Neil Gibson, who was 37 – lost their lives on that fateful day.

Hurricane Florence

Evacuations have already taken place across North Carolina and other parts of the USA’s Atlantic Seaboard, as Hurricane Florence was upgraded to a Category 4 storm. That’s the second-most severe rating. It’s expected to make landfall in America by Thursday.

State capture inquiry

Monday had its fair share of drama, as Jan Gilliland of SA’s Treasury revealed R260 million was paid to Gupta media houses by the government. He had tracked and traced the payments himself. Meanwhile, Duduzane Zuma will now give evidence to the commission, just a week after vowing to avoid it.

Dollar to Rand Value for Tuesday 11 September

The seas are still looking choppy for the rand, although it made a five-cent gain on the dollar yesterday. The Indian rupee is the latest foreign market to crash, in the wake of an escalating trade war between the US and the east. Expect this to have an effect on the ZAR at some point this week.

Solidariteit continue their strike

Members of the trade union group Solidariteit have accused Sasol of ignoring their existence. The company were lambasted for introducing a share scheme only open to black workers, and after a week of strike action, a letter of complaint has been handed over to company CEOs.

Dam levels

Cape Town’s dams stand at 69.1% full – a 3.2% increase over the last seven days. There was also good news for Nelson Mandela Bay after intense rains dragged their dam levels up, too. Churchill dam went from being 16% full to 90% full within the space of a week.

Cope and AfriForum unite

Perhaps not the likeliest of unions, but the spectre of land expropriation without compensation has brought these two outfits together. Scared by the altering of our constitution, leaders of each organisation held a joint press conference – much to the bemusement of the rest of Cope. [Read more: EWN]
