OFFICER KILLED IN TABLE VIEW

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said the police and a local security company responded to an armed business robbery committed by four suspects in Cape Town early on Friday.

“Upon arrival at the business premises, the robbers who had held staff at gunpoint inside the building started shooting at the police as they fled,” said Potelwa.

The police returned fire and a shootout, which left two officers and two suspects wounded, ensued.

“Sadly, a 48-year-old police sergeant from Table View, who sustained gunshot wound to his head, died on arrival at a medical facility in the area,” said the police spokesperson. The other officer was shot in the leg.

A wounded 34-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene, while a second suspect, 36, was arrested nearby. Their two accomplices are on the run and a manhunt is underway.

HAWKS ON THE CASE

The Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Patekile visited the site of the robbery with a view of visiting the deceased officer’s family later on Friday.

“We undertake to use all resources at our disposal to hunt the outstanding suspects. They must be brought to book. In the same breath, we warn police members to be vigilant at all times as they face brazen criminals who would stop at nothing in the execution of crime incidents,” said Patekile.

The name of the deceased will be released once his family has been informed. The Hawks are investigating cases of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.

The SAPS management covered its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.
