Cape Town weather warning: Southeaster could hit 80km/h

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a weather warning for strong winds and high waves in the Western Cape.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for the City of Cape Town and parts of the greater Western Cape on Friday, 7 January. The forecaster said strong winds and high waves are expected to last into the weekend.

CAPE TOWN WEATHER

The weather service said strong to gale force southeasterly winds of between 60 to 70 kilometres per hour – with gusts up to 80km/h – are expected over the southwestern coastline of the province from Friday until 8:00 on Saturday morning.

“Furthermore, the wave heights are expected to reach 3.5 to 4.0 metres between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas by Friday afternoon, while sea conditions will be very rough and choppy,” said the weather service.

Potential impacts include:

  • Choppy and rough seas could result in difficulty for small vessels and personal watercrafts like kayaks.
  • Small vessels are at risk of taking on water and capsizing.
  • Small harbours and ports, as well as beachfront activities, may be disrupted.

Affected areas include the City of Cape Town, Overstrand and Cape Agulhas. In terms of temperature, for Saturday, Cape Town is expected to hit a high of 34 degrees, while Hermanus will be 28 and a partly cloudy Cape Agulhas will be a bit cooler at 25 degrees.
