The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) said its deployment of soldiers along the South African and Mozambican border continues to bear fruit after members attached to the 7 SA Infantry Battalion intercepted six vehicles heading beyond our borders this week.

Captain A Tamela of the Joint Tactical Headquarters in Mpumalanga said SANDF intercepted four stolen vehicles headed to Mozambique on Thursday, 16 December.

“Soldiers were conducting their routine patrols along the borderline around 1:30, when they heard vehicles approaching.

“The soldiers intercepted the convoy less than 100 metres from the borderline,” said Tamela.

The suspects abandoned the vehicles with the keys in the ignition and fled into the bushes.

Four vehicles, including Silver Toyota Hilux Legend 50, a White Toyota Hilux 2.5 double Cab, a Silver Toyota Fortuner and a Bronze Toyota Hilux 2.5 Double Cab, were handed to the Tonga South African Police Service (SAPS) for further investigation.

Earlier this week, SANDF confiscated two more vehicles. The first incident took place on 11 December when soldiers intercepted an Orange Toyota Double Cab Legend near the borderline fence.

In addition, on 14 December, soldiers recovered a Grey Toyota Hilux 2.8 GD6 near Goba Village, which was handed over to Mbuzini SAPS.

“This brings us to 6 vehicles in less than a week. The combined estimated value for all these vehicles is still to be confirmed by the SA Police Service and will be communicated to the public in due course,” said the SANDF spokesperson.
