Parliament announced that the Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service Department has been summoned to the National Assembly building on Wednesday, 16 February.

FIREFIGHTERS CALLED TO PARLIAMENT

Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said structural engineers from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure are currently conducting inspections at the National Assembly building, which was ravaged by fire at the start of the year.

The engineers detected heat in certain spots of the building’s basement and decided “swiftly” to call in firefighters.

“The fire department will be on site shortly to attend to the heat,” said Mothapo at 13:44.

He said summoning the firefighters was a precautionary measure in order to avert a potential flare-up. However, there is no immediate danger to the structural engineers on-site or the Parliamentary precinct in general.

This is a developing story.
