ARMED ROBBERS STRIKE IN KIMBERLEY

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in the Northern Cape Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said a husband and wife were allegedly awoken by a gang of armed robbers – four men and a woman – at approximately 8:00 on Monday.

“The robbers had firearms and severely assaulted the couple before tying them up. They took the owner’s firearm and a substantial amount of cash from the safe and fled the scene,” said Kock.

As they were fleeing, the armed robbers ran into the neighbourhood watch and a shootout ensued. One of the suspects – a 35-year-old man – and a woman bystander, 30, were injured in the crossfire. The shooting took place near the house in Moghul Park.

The injured people were transported to a hospital for medical treatment, according to the police.

The suspect succumbed to his injuries and a woman suspect – aged 24 – was arrested. The other armed robbers managed to escape and are still at large.

Kock said the police have opened an inquest docket following the death of the suspect and the Provincial Organised Crime Detectives are investigating the house robbery.

The public is encouraged not to approach the suspects, as they are considered armed and dangerous.

“Anyone with information regarding the suspects is requested to call Detective Sergeant Eunice Ngono on 053 8362602 or Detective Constable Desmond Maruping on 060 611 5421. Alternatively, you can contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 anonymously or contact us on the MySAPS app,” said the police spokesperson.
