RIP| Funeral services for late primary learners underway

The funeral services for the late Vyfhoek Primary School learners who were run over by a truck are taking place today, Saturday, 27 August.

FUNERAL SERVICES UNDERWAY IN NORTH WEST

The North West Department of Education communicated that three of the families of the learners will hold a joint funeral while two others opted for separate send-offs.

However, these funeral services will conclude with a joint burial for all the five funerals which will take place at Heroes Acre in Potchefstroom later on in the day.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FIVE LEARNERS

The deceased learners, Oreneilie Seroalo (8), Thendo Noxolo Lewane (7), Mahlohonolo Palesa Thekiso (9), Tebogo Reamogetse Motsemme (12) and Christina Lerato Mashai (7) tragically passed away after a truck lost control and plunged into the school premises.

According to the North West Department of Education, on Thursday, 18 August, a mini truck which was travelling from Potchefstroom towards the Johannesburg direction on the N12 road capsized after its front wheel tyre burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle, then went straight through the school fence plunging on nine learners and killing five of them.

The four injured learners were rushed to hospital and one was discharged from hospital on Friday, 19 August.

ASSISTANCE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

A memorial service for late learners was held on 25 August at Madiba Banquet Hall where MEC Mmaphefo Matsemela addressed the school and the bereaved family members.

“As a department, we have established a task team which will deal with the memorial service and the funeral arrangements. This task team will work very closely with all the bereaved families.”

The MEC also ensured that the learners received psychosocial support from experts from their sister departments.

The North West Department of Education has since sent its condolences to all the bereaved families and schooling community.
