Sabie chainsaw robbery: Suspects hold family at gunpoint

An armed trio allegedly broke into a Sabie home, held a family at gunpoint and demanded chainsaws and the keys to the family vehicle.

The police in Nelspruit are on the hunt for three armed suspects that robbed a house in Sabie on Tuesday night, 1 February. The suspects fled the scene with more than a dozen chainsaws and a vehicle.

SABIE POLICE HUNT FOR SUSPECTS

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, said three armed suspects entered a Sabie home at approximately 23:30 on Tuesday. The family was asleep until the noisy burglars woke them up.

“The three intruders then forced opened the door, and whilst doing that, everybody inside the house was woken up by the strange noise into a terrifying scene,” explained Mohlala.

According to the police report, the suspects held the family at gunpoint and demanded chainsaws and car keys.

The armed men loaded 13 chainsaws into the family’s green Toyota Belta sedan and fled the scene. The vehicle was later found empty and abandoned in nearby bushes.

The local police station opened a case of house robbery after the incident was reported and a manhunt was immediately launched.
