The police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating a case of murder and an inquest after a man was beaten to death by a group of people who demanded that he reveal where he had buried his girlfriend who disappeared in November 2021.

DECOMPOSED BODY OF MISSING WOMAN FOUND

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the girlfriend – 34-year-old Thokozile Makhowane – left her home with her boyfriend on 14 November and was never seen again.

The matter was reported to the Besters police station and an abduction case was opened.

“Detectives arrested the 44-year-old man she was last seen with him and he was released by the court due to insufficient evidence.

“The investigating officer continued with his investigation while keeping a close eye on the man,” said Mbele.

A group of people confronted the man at his house on Monday night, 6 December. They demanded answers and beat him to a pulp until he showed them where Thokozile was buried.

“The semi-decomposed body was found in a shallow grave at Bramhoea in Bester area,” said the police spokesperson.

MAN SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES

The police intervened and managed to get the man away from the angry community. However, he succumbed to his severe injuries and wounds on the way to a hospital.

The detectives attached to the Bester SAPS are investigating an inquest and murder. The police advised the public not to take the law into their own hands.

“Those found to be involved in the killing of the man will face the law. They will be arrested and charged accordingly,” said Mbele.
