Parents cautioned after two minors drown in Seshego Dam

Two minors reportedly drowned in Seshego Dam in Limpopo. Several drowning incidents have been reported in the area before.

Parents and guardians have been urged to take care of their children after two boys drowned in Seshego Dam near Zone 4 in Limpopo on Saturday  around 10:00.

Kotsema Ramaru aged 9 and his friend 12-year-old Kubu Mashilo, both from Seshego Zone 5 were reportedly swimming with their friends when this unfortunate incident occurred. 

TWO MINORS DROWN IN LIMPOPO DAM 

According to information at police’s disposal is that the boys were swimming and crossing the dam using white foam props as flotation devices; an occurrence which is said to be a usual practice in the area. 

The unfortunate situation happened when their “boat” capsized in the middle of the dam and both boys drowned.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, said The South African Police Service Search and Rescue members were called to the scene and the divers managed to retrieve the body of one of the boys yesterday.

Ledwaba said the teams will resume with the search for the remaining body this morning, Sunday 14 August 2022.

“Parents are cautioned to ensure that their children do not engage in swimming activities unsupervised and must be wary of this dam as several drowning incidents were reported in the area in the past.”

TWO MEN DIE AFTER CONSUMING ‘SOFT DRINK’

In a separate incident, two men have died while the third was admitted to hospital in Limpopo after they allegedly consumed a substance offered to the surviving victim by an unknown motorist on Thursday 11 August 2022.

According to police, it is reported that the survivor, aged 55, was amongst job seekers in Rabe street at about 09:00 in Mokopane, Limpopo when an unknown man driving a white motor vehicle stopped next to them and asked him if they were looking for a job. The man allegedly gave him bread and a 2L bottle half-filled with a red substance which was apparently assumed to be soft drink. He thereafter drove off. 

On arrival at Extension 14, Mokopane, his younger brother identified as Klaas Muvhalo aged 50 and the other man identified as Thabo Thlako aged 36, drank the substance but he only consumed a bit of it. The two became highly intoxicated.
