A 25-year-old Limpopo woman is believed to have been killed by a crocodile while doing laundry at a river near the Nandoni Dam just outside Thohoyandou.

WOMAN’S HEAD FOUND AFTER SUSPECTED CROCODILE ATTACK

According to SABC News, Tshitomboni Village community members conducted a search for the deceased when she did not return home on New Year’s Day – 1 January 2022.

Phillip Munyai, the Collins Chabane Municipality ward councillor, told the public broadcaster that only the head of the deceased was found.

He added that water scarcity forces the villagers to put themselves in harm’s way when they turn to the crocodile-infested Nandoni Dam for water.

“The family noticed her when she was going for washing but they didn’t notice when she got back. We went there and search for her body.

“We were disappointed when we found that the body is already lost, eaten by the crocodile – only her head which is left,” said Munyai.

The ward councillor said the village has not had drinking or washing water since the establishment of the dam and pleaded with the government to speed up its water and sanitation efforts in the area.

Munyai told TimesLive that four people have been killed in crocodile attacks in the same river while bathing, fetching water or doing laundry. The police have opened an inquest docket.
