The Democratic Alliance (DA) is lining up to pull the trigger on one of its biggest political opponents in KwaZulu-Natal. The party has levelled the scope squarely on Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) deputy mayor in the Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality, Sthabiso Dladla.

Dladla made the DA’s hit list after a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist on the R103 outside Estcourt in the KZN midlands last Wednesday. Allegedly, the robbery took place with Dladla’s full knowledge and involvement.

Now, the DA wants nothing less than for Dladla to step down, saying it plans to go for the jugular by pursuing a motion of no confidence. According to reports, a robbery crew accosted several CIT guards while travelling to their base in Ladysmith.

The CIT robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of money, but KZN police arrested two suspects and recovered the cash a day later. A subsequent police report suggested the two suspects allegedly pointed to Dladla as the mastermind behind the heist.

It’s unknown if police charged Dladla after searching his home over the weekend. On Monday afternoon, the deputy mayor reportedly went to the police for clarity on the allegation.

DA motion of no confidence, plan to lay charges fails

DA MP in the uThukela District Municipality Robert Lees said its plans to act decisively against Dladla have since ground to a halt.

“Since the police have not completed their investigation, the DA will not submit a motion of no confidence in the deputy mayor. Neither I nor the DA has laid any charges against the deputy mayor.”

Elsewhere, IFP KZN provincial chairperson Thami Ntuli refuted the allegations, citing the claims were baseless. He urged SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation. He added that the IFP would take disciplinary action should the outcome not favour Dladla.

“The IFP expects police to investigate this matter thoroughly. They need to act with urgency to bring it to a logical conclusion. Additionally, the party reserves its right to invoke disciplinary processes at any time, should it become necessary.

“The IFP reiterates its commitment to good governance and ethical leadership, especially from its elected representatives.”
