KZN YOUNG GIRLS’ CRISIS

Meanwhile, KwaZulu Natal has a serious social development disaster to face. No less than 21 000 girls fell pregnant in the province within 2021. The province’s MEC for Social Development Nonhlanhla Khoza confirmed on Saturday.

It is said that the rural areas of the province emerge as the major contributor to the crisis, where traditional customers tend to violate young and older women’s rights.

Khoza said the department is alarmingly concerned over the frightening numbers in the province. She revealed the report at an event in Mpandwini Area in Mbumbulu, south of Durban, where government and traditional leaders discussed the role of men in curbing Gender-Based Violence.

“Looking at the stats, you tell yourself ‘who made them pregnant’ because they are starting from the age of 9 to 14 years,” Khoza said to SABC News.
