The Central University of Technology (CUT) has a students applications big jam in Bloemfontein. You won’t believe the number of applications CUT confirmed on Thursday.

CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY STUDENT APPLICATIONS CALAMITY

According to the institution, there are only about 4 000 seats for first-year students available, but the number of students applications that have flooded in are nearly 200 000. It’s a disaster.

CUT has asked for no walk-ins but this has not stopped long queues outside the institution’s gates this week.

“Some are unfortunately walk-ins which we cannot take in. The university received more than 192 000 applications and we can actually just accept below 4 000 first years,” said spokesperson, Seithati Semenokane, as quoted by SABC News.

“This is the situation in the country, however, we do want to just encourage people to apply the year before so that we do not have this situation again.”

WHAT’S THE PLAN?

CUT’s SRC President, Luvuyo Jacobs, has suggested that the institution created a call centre service, but unfortunately, the volume of enquiries has been overwhelming.

The institution is in the process of getting added personnel to service the student applications crises as soon as possible.

“The major problem that we have been receiving is the issue of the call centre that the university has made available for students to call if they have registration queries, but it is situations that on daily basis we are communicating with the university management and they are still promising to get more manpower to assist during this process,’ Jacobs said.

“On top of that, there are major issues that we normally face during registration like student finance.”
