Every province recorded a marked increase in cases on Wednesday. There are now 36 600 active cases in South Africa.

South Africa recorded more than 8500 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, 1 December, according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD). The 51 977 tests conducted over the past 24 hours represent a positivity rate of 16,5 percent up from yesterday’s 10,2 percent. Gauteng remains the most affected province.
The 8561 new COVID-19 cases detected in South Africa on Wednesday brings the total number of active cases in the country to 36 600. Unfortunately, 28 more people died of COVID-19-related complications, according to the NICD, bringing the death toll to 89 871.
There were 135 people admitted to hospital for COVID-19 treatment within the latest testing cycle. The 258 private and 407 public hospitals reporting to the NICD now have 2550 patients admitted.
“The proportion of positive new cases/total new tested today is 16.5% which higher than yesterday (10.7%). The 7-day average is 10.3% today, which is higher than yesterday (8.5%),” said the NICD.
The majority of the cases identified on Wednesday were found in Gauteng (72%), followed by the Western Cape (7%) and KwaZulu-Natal (6%).
Mpumalanga and North West each accounted for 4 percent, respectively, while Limpopo (3%), Free State (2%), Eastern Cape (1%) rounded off the list.
The Northern Cape once again accounted for less than 1 percent of the day’s new cases.
