We’ve got all the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa you really need to know on Tuesday, 20 September 2022.

SNOW has been confirmed in several parts of South Africa on Monday evening. And MORE snow is expected.

Things may be improving after all on the electricity front, as Eskom has announced it will be reducing load shedding to stage 5 at midnight. 

Perhaps there is a no greater visual representation of Eskom’s current situation than one of its own conveyer belts catching fire. The site at Kriel has left onlookers concerned after huge flames, and billowing smoke filled the skies above.

We reported on two horrific accidents on Monday. Scenes of an extraordinary and shocking nature have reached us from Ulundi in KZN, after a truck slammed into ANOTHER crashed vehicle on Monday. 

It’s a video that will send shivers down your spine. An e-hailing driver from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town has been arrested, after he was caught on CCTV ploughing into a crowd of children. At least eight youngsters were caught-up in the carnage.

Just in! SNOW confirmed in parts of SA on MONDAY evening

SNOW has been confirmed in parts of South Africa on Monday evening. And MORE snow is expected. According to Snow Report, snow was confirmed on Monday evening along the Barkly Pass R58 between Barkly East and Elliot in the Eastern Cape.

“The webcam at Mountain Shadows Hotel on the Barkly Pass (R58) between Barkly East and Elliot in the Eastern Cape is showing a dusting already. Plenty more is expected in this area and elsewhere as per our forecast.”

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued several warnings for snow, heavy rain, and possible flooding until Wednesday.

Progress, or no? Load shedding REDUCED to Stage 5 at midnight

Things may be improving after all on the electricity front, as Eskom has announced it will be reducing load shedding to stage 5 at midnight. The embattled parastatal escalated load shedding to stage 6 in the wee hours of Sunday morning, 18 September, 2022, citing the breakdown of generating units at its Kriel and Kusile power stations.

Eskom now says generating units have returned to service at some of its power stations, including the ones which prompted the escalation of stage 6 load shedding. However, South Africans are in for more hours in the dark, with the implementation of stage 5 load shedding from Tuesday morning.

Up in smoke: Fire engulfs conveyor belt at ‘troubled’ Eskom site

Perhaps there is no greater visual representation of Eskom’s current situation than one of its own conveyer belts catching fire. The site at Kriel has left onlookers concerned, after huge flames and billowing smoke filled the skies above.

Kriel was one of the power plants that experienced a unit failure over the weekend, plunging South Africa in Stage 6 of load shedding. The plant itself has been something of a ‘problem child’ over the years for Eskom – and this incident has proved to be no exception.

WATCH: Horror as Mitchells Plain driver ‘mows down’ eight kids


It’s a video that will send shivers down your spine. An e-hailing driver from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town has been arrested, after he was caught on CCTV ploughing into a crowd of children. At least eight youngsters were caught-up in the carnage.

The driver has not yet been named for legal reasons. It’s understood there was less than 20 minutes between this incident taking place, and the man behind the wheel getting arrested. Some of the kids have suffered serious injuries, whereas others only needed treatment for minor issues.

WATCH: Man drags woman to safety after Ulundi FIREBALL crash

Scenes of an extraordinary and shocking nature have reached us from Ulundi in KZN, after a truck slammed into ANOTHER crashed vehicle on Monday. The smash-up caused an almighty fireball to erupt – but miraculously, no deaths have been reported in the secondary crash.

That’s thanks in part to one mysterious man, who could be seen dragging a woman to safety before going back to assist another passenger. The nasty accident took place where the R34 meets the R66, between Ulundi and Vryheid. The road has been closed in both directions.
