We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Sunday, 21 August.

Snowy, rainy, and windy conditions are expected in parts of the country this weekend. In some parts, snowfall, up to 10cm is expected on Saturday.

The snow and icy weather have turned parts of SA into a winter wonderland. And MORE snow is expected on Saturday.

Now we’ve seen it all! A POLICE officer in a marked police vehicle was hijacked in the Eastern Cape in the early hours of Saturday. The hijacked police vehicle was later found abandoned.

Meanwhile, the Department of Education in Gauteng confirmed that a Grade 9 pupil committed suicide over alleged homophobic comments made by his teacher.

The Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has rejected reports that he supports the return of corporal punishment in schools.

An article on TimesLive implied that Lesufi does not oppose the use of corporal punishment. This apparently happened when he was responding to questions from the parents of Fred Norman Secondary School in Ennerdale on Tuesday. This visit came after a racism incident between a teacher and a parent.

POLICE officer in marked vehicle HIJACKED in Eastern Cape

Now we’ve seen it all! A POLICE officer in a marked police vehicle was hijacked in the Eastern Cape in the early hours of Saturday. The hijacked police vehicle was later found abandoned.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the hijacking happened around 01:00 on Saturday morning.

“A manhunt has been launched by the Eastern Cape Police following an armed robbery of a police officer in the early hours of Saturday 20 August 2022 at about 1h00 in Engcobo area.”

Kinana said according to the information; the police officer had attended to a complaint of a person who was raped.

Pupil commits suicide after teacher allegedly mocked sexuality

The Department of Education in Gauteng confirmed that a Grade 9 pupil committed suicide over alleged homophobic comments made by his teacher.

The student attended PJ Simelane Secondary School in Soweto and was allegedly mocked by his teacher over his sexuality. The teacher has been accused of mocking the student’s sexuality in front of the whole class.

EWN reports that the teacher is a woman and that the incident occurred during a speech presentation. The male child who ended his life identified as gay. The teacher reportedly turned the lesson into one about the child’s sexuality.

‘I didn’t say that’: Lesufi rejects reports he promotes corporal punishment

The Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has rejected reports that he supports the return of corporal punishment in schools.

The article raised the eyebrows of the South African Human Rights Commission, which raised concerns about what Lesufi reportedly said.
