We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday, 3 December.

Another alleged drug mule was busted while attempting to bring cocaine into South Africa via OR Tambo International Airport. The 29-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday.

In other news, the life of a 32-year-old man has ended in tragedy recently after he was accidentally shot dead by his own dog.

Gayton McKenzie, the mayor of the Central Karoo District in the Western Cape has vowed to protect the trucks in the town.

A Cape Town couple faces criminal charges after the pet owner docked a Rottweiler puppy’s tail. A Durbanville veterinarian informed the Cape of Good Hope SPCA of the incident after the owner brought the two-month-old dog in for treatment.

While it is yet to be made clear whether President Cyril Ramaphosa will step down, we wonder if he will he also be queuing for a SASSA grant since he will be unemployed.

Gayton McKenzie deals with sail-cutting of trucks in Western Cape

Gayton McKenzie, the mayor of the Central Karoo District in the Western Cape has vowed to protect the trucks in the town.

“We shall keep our truckers safe in Beaufort West,” uttered McKenzie as he vowed to put an end to the sail-cutting of goods trucks in the town.

“One of the main things that give a bad name to this wonderful town is the stealing or cutting the sails of the trucks, this has been ongoing for many years.”McKenzie

Brazilian drug smuggler nabbed with cocaine at OR Tambo Airport

Another alleged drug mule was busted while attempting to bring cocaine into South Africa via OR Tambo International Airport. The 29-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday, 27 November.

The Directorate for Priority Investigations (Hawks) said Garcia Fortes Mariah Carvalho came to South Africa on a flight from Qatar.

“The arrest was conducted through an intelligence-driven operation where Carvalho was identified, and her luggage searched,” said Captain Lloyd Ramovha.

Rottweiler puppy nearly dies after owner docks tail with rubber band

A Cape Town couple faces criminal charges after the pet owner docked a Rottweiler puppy’s tail. A Durbanville veterinarian informed the Cape of Good Hope SPCA of the incident after the owner brought the two-month-old dog in for treatment.

The Rottweiler puppy, Zara, reportedly collapsed and was rushed to a local private vet for urgent treatment by her owner.

The owner allegedly attempted to dock Zara’s tail by placing a rubber band on her tail.

Freak accident: Hunter shot dead by own dog during excursion

The life of a 32-year-old man has ended in tragedy recently after he was accidentally shot dead by his own dog. According to several international media outlets, including The New York Post, Ozgur Gevrekoglu had been on an excursion with several of his friends in Turkey during Thanksgiving weekend.

The new father was reportedly pursuing game in the mountains of Alacam, in the province of Samsun, located on the Black Sea coast, when the incident occurred. Gevrekoglu was apparently putting his pet dog in his car when the dog’s his paw inadvertently touched the trigger of the still-loaded gun, causing the weapon to fire.

According to reports, he died of a gunshot wound to his stomach before paramedics arrived on the scene. He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead. Gevrekoglu was then transferred to a state hospital in Samsun for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Will Ramaphosa also queue for a SASSA grant if he resigns?

While it is yet to be made clear whether President Cyril Ramaphosa will step down, we wonder if he will he also be queuing for a SASSA grant since he will be unemployed.  

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provides social grants for the elderly, disabled, and children. It also provides the R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, introduced at the height of Covid-19 for unemployed citizens. 

Former South African presidents enjoy many benefits, including a substantial pension, medical aid, and provision of security. So, the chances of Ramaphosa queuing for a SASSA grant are zero, mainly because he is also a businessman.
