We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday, 10 December.

Heavy rain hit Johannesburg overnight, and flooding has been reported across the city. On Friday morning, 9 December, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) advised residents about a number of bridge and road collapses.

Emergency services were despatched to the scene where passengers were stuck in a sinking bus on Friday, 9 December, in Orlando, Soweto.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said most of the country would experience rain over the coming days, and there will be a risk of flash flooding in some places.

In other news, the Constitutional Court has reportedly dismissed Limpho Hani’s reconsideration application to release her husband’s killer, Janusz Walus, from prison.

Lastly, a jewellery shop in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape was robbed by armed suspects on Tuesday, 6 December. According to reports, the 94-year-old owner put up a valiant fight.

LOOK: Collapsed bridges and roads in flood-hit Johannesburg

Heavy rain hit Johannesburg overnight, and flooding has been reported across the city. On Friday morning, 9 December, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) advised residents about a number of bridge and road collapses.

The Roodepoort area is one of the areas most affected by the flooding, and critical road infrastructure has been damaged, said the JRA.

Emergency services rescue passengers from sinking bu

Emergency services were despatched to the scene where passengers were stuck in a sinking bus on Friday, 9 December in Orlando, Soweto.

Johannesburg has seen downpours which has caused flooding and severe storm damage.

EMER-G-Emergency MED’s Operations Centre received a frantic call at around 6:30 from a passenger on a bus.

Weekend weather: Cut-off low to bring wet weather to most of SA

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) said most of the country would experience rain over the coming days, and there will be a risk of flash flooding in some places.

The central and eastern parts of South Africa have already experienced flooding recently due to the rainfall since the start of the summer rainy season.

“The ground in many of these places remains saturated, and rivers and streams are running full. Under such conditions, a flash flood could be triggered quite easily, and the public is therefore strongly urged to be extra vigilant,” said the weather service.

BREAKING: ConCourt dismisses Limpho Hani’s application to rescind release of Janusz Walus

The Constitutional Court has reportedly dismissed Limpho Hani’s reconsideration application to release her husband’s killer, Janusz Walus from prison.

On Wednesday, 7 December, the Department of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed that Walus was released from the hospital where he had been kept after he was stabbed by another prisoner on 29 November.

As previously reported, Walus was serving a life sentence for the 1993 murder of anti-apartheid activist and South African Communist Party (SACP) leader, Chris Hani.

A 94-year-old jewellery shop owner fights off three armed robbers

A jewellery shop in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape was robbed by armed suspects on Tuesday, 6 December. According to reports, the 94-year-old owner put up a valiant fight.

Schalk Pienaar, 94, the owner of Plett Jewellers told the Knysna-Plett Herald that he opened his security gate for a customer who had shown interest in purchasing gold chains the previous day.

When the gate was opened three people entered the shop and two of them were armed.
