We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 4 November.

The SA Weather Service issued several warnings for SEVERE thunderstorms with HAIL, lightning and heavy rain for several parts of the country on Thursday.

An extreme weather event caught residents of a small Kalahari town off-guard this week. The people of Askham were pelted by chunks of hail that were reportedly ‘as big as golf balls’, briefly turning the desert region into a winter wonderland.

A man died after his vehicle plunged off the notorious Voëlklip cliff on Monday. His body and car wreck was recovered this morning.

Johannesburg will be getting its first artificial beach next year and here are five things you need to know.

And lastly, a Durban doctor said the sixth wave of COVID-19 is ‘likely inevitable’ in the city. He expects it to accelerate in the coming days.

An extreme weather event caught residents of a small Kalahari town off-guard this week. The people of Askham were pelted by chunks of hail that were reportedly ‘as big as golf balls’, briefly turning the desert region into a winter wonderland.

Askham is one of the most remote locations in the Northern Cape. The small community sits near the international border of both Namibia and Botswana. It straddles the Kuruman River, and it takes just under two hours to drive to the town from Upington.

Dis-Chem sales affected by leaked policy on hiring whites

Sales of pharmaceutical retailer, Dis-Chem have reportedly plummeted following uproar over its controversial moratorium that leaked. The document stated that white South Africans would be blocked from appointments or promotions in the company.

Dis-Chem Chief Financial Officer Rui Morais has confirmed that sales declined following the publication of Saltzman’s letter and the social media storm that followed after as many called for the company to be boycotted.

Dis-Chem became a hot topic after the policy on hiring whites was leaked.

Man killed as vehicle plunges off DEADLY Voëlklip cliff

Police said a man died after his vehicle plunged off the notorious Voëlklip cliff on Monday. His body and car wreck was recovered this morning. 

According to police spokesperson Capt Malcolm Pojie, the man’s body was found inside the wreck of a car at the bottom of a cliff on Voëlklip Road on Thursday morning. 

This follows extensive search and rescue efforts by various emergency services after indicators of an alleged incident were reported on Tuesday.

Durban doctor says sixth COVID-19 wave is ‘likely inevitable’

A Durban doctor based in Morningside reported an uptick in COVID-19-positive cases among his patients since Monday, 31 October.

The general practitioner, Dr. Kevindra Naidu, said there had been a few isolated cases of COVID-19 at his practices over the past fortnight, however, since Monday it has worsened.

Naidu said most of his patients that presented with a cough and fever or rapid pulse have tested positive for the disease for three days in a row.
