We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 2 December.

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting has been postponed to Friday to discuss the Phala Phala report.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is under severe pressure after the Section 89 Independent Panel made several adverse findings against him over the Phala Phala scandal.

Ramaphosa is expected to address the nation “soon.”

Janusz Walus, the killer of anti-Apartheid fighter Chris Hani, could’ve been a free man today, 1 December, after the Constitutional Court granted him parole.

However, those plans had to be halted after Walus was stabbed by an inmate in the same housing unit at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria. 

In other news, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said the number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Mpumalanga and Limpopo has risen to 99. A week ago, the figure was sitting at 77.

A cold front is expected to pass through the Western Cape on Friday and bring strong winds to parts of the province.

Assaulted Deputy Principal of Kgagatlou Secondary School in Limpopo tendered his resignation to the Limpopo Department of Education.

ANC NEC meeting postponed as Motlanthe rules out returning as president

The ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) meeting has been postponed to Friday to discuss the Phala Phala report.

This comes shortly after Committee chairperson Kgalema Motlanthe said he would not consider a return as caretaker President if called to do so.

The virtual meeting was scheduled for Thursday evening, but the NEC will now sit in person at Nasrec in Johannesburg.

Janusz Walus parole barred by medical concerns NOT protests

Janusz Walus, the killer of anti-Apartheid fighter Chris Hani, could’ve been a free man today, 1 December after he was granted parole by the Constitutional Court.

However, those plans had to be halted after Walus was stabbed by an inmate in the same housing unit at Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre in Pretoria on Tuesday, 29 November.

Assaulted Deputy Principal RESIGNS after sexual scandal

Assaulted Deputy Principal of Kgagatlou Secondary School in Limpopo tendered his resignation to the Limpopo Department of Education.

This after the Deputy Principal landed himself in hot water for his alleged affair with a learner in school.

It is reported that the teacher resigned with immediate effect on Wednesday, 30 November. This after he was allegedly caught pants down with a learner and paid the hard way for his actions. Consequently, he was beaten to a pulp by community members who left him naked and soaking in blood.

Measles outbreak: Lab-confirmed cases rise to 99

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said the number of laboratory-confirmed measles cases in Mpumalanga and Limpopo has risen to 99. A week ago, the figure was sitting at 77.

Limpopo is home to 77 cases, and the most affected districts are Greater Sekhukhune, Mopani and Waterberg. The South African measles outbreak started in Greater Sekhukhune earlier this year.

In Mpumalanga, which is home to 22 cases, there was a marked increase in the number of patients in the Elukwatini area of the Gert Sibande district.

Cold front expected to bring 90km/h gusts to parts of Western Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 1 warning for wind in the Western Cape on Thursday, 1 December. The warning key indicates there is a medium likelihood of minor weather-based impacts.

The wind warning is valid from 12:00 until 23:59 on Friday, 2 December. The weather service said a cold front is expected to pass through the Western Cape on Friday, likely bringing strong westerly to southwesterly winds.
