Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has kick-started Women’s Month on a sad note following the murder of a female student.

Acting Chancellor and Principal of the institution M.M Ramagole expressed pain and disbelief following the murder of Xolile Mbatha.

Motorists in Belhar, Cape Town, spotted a severed leg lying at the side of Erica Drive on Tuesday morning, 2 August. The police found the body the leg belongs to after combing the area.

Meanwhile, an illegal miner, Zama Zama, was shot and killed and multiple injured in a shootout with police at Krugersdorp mine on Tuesday.

Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, stated that he believes the 19-year-old victim in the tragic Krugersdrop mass rape was lucky to be raped by only one man. 

He was quoted in an interview with eNCA. Though his sentiment was that she was not raped by multiple men like the other victims, his choice of language has outraged many in the population.

And lastly, Earth is under a solar storm warning for Wednesday due to the chance of a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm hitting our planet.

MUT female student murdered at the start of Women’s Month

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) has kick-started Women’s Month on a sad note following the murder of a female student.

Acting Chancellor and Principal of the institution M.M Ramagole expressed pain and disbelief following the murder of Xolile Mbatha.

“It is so hard to communicate right at the beginning of Women’s Month the heartless and brutal killing of Xolile Mbatha, an Electrical Engineering student.

“I am at a loss for words to describe this dreadful act performed by a fellow male student at the Ark Royal Residence, one of MUT’s externally leased residences.”

Bheki Cele says 19-year-old was ‘lucky to be raped’ by only one man

Bheki Cele, Minister of Police, stated that he believes the 19-year-old victim in the tragic Krugersdrop mass rape was lucky to be raped by only one man. 

He was quoted in an interview with eNCA. Though his sentiment was that she was not raped by multiple men like the other victims, his choice of language has outraged many in the population.

Cele said the following in the interview:

“One woman was raped ten times, not ten times but by ten different men. The other one by eight, the other by six, the other one by four, three. The one 19-year-old was lucky, if it is lucky, to be raped by one man.”

He spoke, referring to the devastating events in Krugersdorp. A film crew was shooting in an abandoned mine dump when their film site was intruded on and robbed.

Illegal miner killed, multiple other Zama Zamas injured in police shootout

An illegal miner, Zama Zama, was shot and killed and multiple injured in a shootout with police at Krugersdorp mine on Tuesday.

According to Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst, the shooting happened at around 12:00 on Tuesday afternoon.

“At 12H07 Tuesday afternoon, Netcare 911 responded to a shooting at a disused mine off the R28 in Luipaardsvlei, Krugersdorp on the West Rand.

“Reports indicate that various law enforcement agencies together with mine authorities held a sting operation.”

Cape Town motorists spot severed leg – rest of body found in nearby open field

Motorists in Belhar, Cape Town spotted a severed leg lying at the side of Erica Drive on Tuesday morning, 2 August. The police found the body the leg belongs to after combing the area.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said the police were told that the leg of an unidentified person was lying on the pavement in Belhar by a passerby.

 A commuter on the way to work told The South African they saw one leg on the pavement and another leg a few metres away.

“Members immediately responded and on further investigation, the rest of the body of an unidentified male with multiple stabbed wounds was found on an open field next to Erica Drive Belhar,” said van Wyk.

Solar storm forecast to hit Earth on WEDNESDAY – here is what you need to know

Earth is under a solar storm warning for Wednesday due to the chance of a minor G1-class geomagnetic storm hitting our planet.

High-speed solar winds from a “hole” in the sun’s atmosphere are set to hit Earth’s magnetic field on Wednesday. This will trigger a minor G-1 geomagnetic storm.

Although it might be a minor storm, scientists warned that it might have a slight impact on Earth’s geomagnetic field and cause radio and GPS signal disruptions.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) classifies geometric storms in five stages – one being the weakest and five the strongest.
