Former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moarane has died. Moerane was certified dead at 17:54 at the Milpark Hospital, family spokesperson Mike Maile confirmed.

Meanwhile, the Moerane family and the ANC earlier today came out guns blazing against false media reports that he succumbed to his injuries.

Firefighters were still on the scene of two big fires in George on Wednesday evening. These are the Hansmoeskraal fire and a second fire, including the Saasveld Road, Kraaibosch Manor, and Groenkloof Road.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 weather warning for snow and an Orange Level 5 warning for rain in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 18 May.

 A giant dead leatherback turtle washed ashore on the South Coast on Tuesday. According to the Mpenjati Conservancy, this female leatherback sea turtle was found washed up on Trafalgar Marine Reserve beach. 

And then lastly, heavy rainfall amounts exceeding 20 mm are expected for KwaZulu-Natal for the weekend. This comes as the province was still recovering from the deadly floods last month.

JUST IN! Former Joburg mayor Mpho Moerane has died

Former Johannesburg mayor Mpho Moarane has died. 

Moerane was certified dead at 17:54 at the Milpark Hospital, family spokesperson Mike Maile confirmed. Moerane has been in hospital for more than a week after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident.

Maile said Moerane sadly did not respond positively to treatment. With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, we confirm we lost our beloved Mpho this afternoon. His passing has deeply pained us.”

Firefighters still fighting two big raging fires in George on Wednesday

Firefighters were still on the scene of two big fires in George on Wednesday evening. 

These are the Hansmoeskraal fire and a second fire which include the Saasveld Road, Kraaibosch Manor, and Groenkloof Road.

“Hansmoeskraal fire remains active, firefighting crews are on the scene. Resources on site are the George Municipal 30 000 litre tanker and a Unimog.

“On the scene at Saasveld Road, Kraaibosch Manor, and Groenkloof Road, firefighting crews were actively fighting the fires with three fire engines on-site and aerial support activated this afternoon at 15:36.”

Brrr! LEVEL 5 weather warning: Rain and up to 15cm of snow for E. Cape

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 4 weather warning for snow and an Orange Level 5 warning for rain in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 18 May. 22

The weather warning is valid from 17:00 until 23:59 on Friday, 20 May, according to SAWS.

The inclement weather is the result of a combination of a cut-off low and a ridging high-pressure system, which is expected to significantly decrease the daytime temperatures in the province and bring a good chance of showers and thundershowers.

Wow! Giant leatherback turtle found on beach in Trafalgar, KwaZulu-Natal

Oooh wow! A giant dead leatherback turtle washed ashore on the South Coast on Tuesday. 

According to the Mpenjati Conservancy, this female leatherback sea turtle was found washed up on Trafalgar Marine Reserve beach.

“They are not usually found this far south as they are more common in tropical Moçambique and further north. It is presumed that her body was probably brought up onto the beach during Monday night’s high tide.”

Warning! Heavy rainfall exceeding 20 mm expected for KwaZulu-Natal

Warning! Heavy rainfall amounts exceeding 20 mm are expected for KwaZulu-Natal for the weekend. This comes as the province was still recovering from the deadly floods last month.

In April, heavy downpours in parts of KZN left behind a trail of destruction – destroying critical infrastructure and washing away thousands of homes. 

More than 440 people have lost their lives in the floods, while others remain unaccounted for.
