We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Sunday, 18 September.

Eskom announced that Stage 5 load shedding would be implemented until 5:00 on Monday after five generating units broke down overnight and on Saturday morning. The worsened power cuts will commence at 10:00.

FREEZING temperatures are expected as SNOW and heavy rain will make landfall on Sunday. Snow of up to 20cm while heavy rain of up to 100mm is expected in parts of South Africa.

The truck driver in the N2 Pongola accident on Friday, 16 September, handed himself over to the authorities after initially fleeing the scene.

As previously reported, 21 people, including 19 school children, died in the crash between the truck and a bakkie on Friday.

The Northern Cape Department of Education confirmed that the fire at Garies High School was finally brought under control, just after 16:00 on Saturday, 17 September. The school suffered devastating structural damage.

Ninteen-year-old Neo Jithu Marele, who was brutally attacked by other learners from another school was laid to rest today, Saturday, 17 September.

BREAKING: STAGE 5 load shedding until Monday after FIVE units broke down

Eskom announced that Stage 5 load shedding would be implemented until 5:00 on Monday after five generating units broke down overnight and on Saturday morning. The worsened power cuts will commence at 10:00.

According to the power supplier, 2400MW of capacity was lost due to the breakdowns and should any further breakdowns occur, higher stages of load shedding could be implemented at short notice.

“A unit each at Kusile, Arnot and Camden, as well as two units at Duvha Power Station tripped. While some generation units are anticipated to return to service, it is necessary to escalate the load shedding to stop the use of the emergency generation reserves and begin the replenishment thereof ahead of the week,” said Eskom.

Pongola: Truck driver in accident that killed 21 people hands himself over

The truck driver in the N2 Pongola accident on Friday, 16 September, handed himself over to the authorities after initially fleeing the scene.

As previously reported, 21 people, including 19 school children, died in the crash between the truck and a bakkie on Friday.

“The driver handed himself over to the police today after a call by the MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Sipho Hlomuka,” said the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport on Saturday.

FREEZING temperatures are expected as SNOW, and heavy rain will make landfall on Sunday. Snow of up to 20cm while heavy rain of up to 100mm is expected in parts of South Africa.

According to VoxWeather, only light flurries are likely to fall over the Matroosberg Nature Reserve in the Western Cape.

“The snow will quickly melt, with most of the snow falling over the HIGH PEAKS of the Cederberg Mountain Range Into Monday, snow spreading over the Eastern Cape mountains and Drakensberg.

Garies High School fire: 11 classrooms, toilets and admin block ‘completely destroyed’

The Northern Cape Department of Education confirmed that the fire at Garies High School was finally brought under control, just after 16:00 on Saturday, 17 September. The school suffered devastating structural damage.

Geoffrey van der Merwe, the spokesperson for the department, said the Garies High School fire, which broke out early on Saturday, was brought under control and firefighters from Springbok, Aggeneys and Vredendal will continue to monitor the situation as it is very windy in the area.

RIP: Brutally attacked learner laid to rest

Ninteen-year-old Neo Jithu Marele, who was brutally attacked by other learners from another school was laid to rest today, Saturday, 17 September.

The brutally attacked learner, who attended Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School, succumbed to his injuries following the incident last week.

Family, friends and the community of Tembisa gathered earlier to bid farewell to the youngster.
