We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday, 16 July.

Another mass shooting left South Africans reeling on Friday. Overnight, suspects – seven of whom have now been arrested – opened fire in separate locations across Alexandra. The Gauteng township was besieged by bullets, and earlier this afternoon, the death toll increased.

One of the victims includes Joshua Mbatha, a local and much-respected radio presenter.

Details reaching us this morning are grim: It’s understood that Mbatha was forced, at gunpoint, to hand over his shoes and his cell phone. Sadly, this wasn’t enough to spare his life – and the assailants fired a fatal shot into the radio personality’s chest.

The police in the Free State have launched a manhunt for the unknown suspects behind a mass farm murder in the Lismor Farm District, Kestell. The bodies of seven farmworkers were found inside their home on Friday, 15 July.

In an unrelated incident, 39-year-old Free State farmworker was arrested for alleged attempted murder on Thursday, 14 July. The incident reportedly took place on a Trompsburg farm on Monday.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the victims included six women and one young man.

Meanwhile, a high-speed chase in Durban went horribly wrong on Thursday evening. And it was all captured by the dash cam of the SAPS flying squad vehicle.

In other news, a security guard contracted by Eskom has been wounded after being shot by while escorting technicians in Mabopane, Tshwane earlier this week.

Alexandra massacre: SEVEN suspects arrested – as death toll rises further

Another mass shooting has left South Africans reeling on Friday. Overnight, suspects – seven of whom have now been arrested – opened fire in separate locations across Alexandra. The Gauteng township was besieged by bullets, and earlier this afternoon, the death toll increased.

Minister Bheki Cele arrived in Alex this morning. Following discussions with the local police force and Gauteng Premier David Makhura, the top cop addressed the media – confirming that the tragedy had been compounded by another death reported in hospital.

Popular radio presenter, four others shot dead in Alexandra

A night of brutal and bloody violence has taken place in the Alexandra township, after five people were gunned down. One of the victims includes Joshua Mbatha, a local and much-respected radio presenter.

Mass farm murder: Seven ‘brutally shot and killed’ in Free State

The police in the Free State have launched a manhunt for the unknown suspects behind a mass farm murder in the Lismor Farm District, Kestell. The bodies of seven farmworkers were found inside their home on Friday, 15 July.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said the victims included six women and one young man.

The farm owner allegedly discovered the lifeless bodies of the farmworkers in their house on the farm on Friday.

Makhele said the victims were “brutally shot and killed by unknown suspect(s).” The motive for the mass farm murder is unknown at this stage.

Farmworker allegedly strangled woman after being caught ‘going through drawers’

A 39-year-old Free State farmworker was arrested for alleged attempted murder on Thursday, 14 July. The incident reportedly took place on a Trompsburg farm on Monday.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Warrant Officer Loraine Earle said a 62-year-old woman was attacked by a farmworker at approximately 17:00 on Monday.

“She was inside the house when she allegedly came across a farmworker going through drawers.  Upon seeing her, the suspect grabbed, strangled and assaulted her then fled the scene,” said Earle.

WATCH: High-speed chase in Durban gone WRONG

 high-speed chase in Durban went horribly wrong on Thursday evening. And it was all captured by the dash cam of the SAPS flying squad vehicle.

The video has since gone viral. According to reports the incident happened on Thursday evening but it could not yet be confirmed. 

In the video, a high-speed chase is in pursuit with a car seen swerving recklessly in between cars in the traffic as he tries to evade the police behind him.

As the police vehicle closes the gap between them, the two-lane road becomes one lane at the traffic lights. And suddenly a car is seen right in front of the police vehicle. You need to watch the video with sound.
