We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Saturday, 13 August.

Snow and MORE rain are expected to make landfall in several parts of South Africa this afternoon as a cold front moves in on FRIDAY. 

This cold front is part of a series of cold fronts predicted for the coming weekend. 

 The four horsemen of the cold weather apocalypse will all be present in the Western Cape this weekend, and a ‘big freeze’ is now forecast for the province on Sunday night. We sincerely hope the locals have their blankets at the ready.

A potentially hazardous asteroid named 2015 FF will be zipping past Earth TODAY at 33 000 kilometres per hour (km/h) TODAY.  

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) said a total of 115 cases of enteric fever had been reported in South Africa in 2022.

So let’s break it up and see what exactly enteric fever is and if we should be worried. 

Meanwhile, the South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is preparing to wield its enormous power later this month, by leading the proposed National Shutdown. The countrywide protest, supported by political institutions such as the EFF and PAC, threatens to bring Mzansi to its knees.

And lastly, the University of Stellenbosch has confirmed the death of one of its students, Ky Rowe, at Simonsberg men’s residence

This cold front is part of a series of cold fronts predicted for the coming weekend. 

According to VoxWeather, the first cold front of 𝗧𝗛𝗥𝗘𝗘 moved over the SW coast on Wednesday.

“The second stronger cold front arrives on Friday morning to bring scattered showers and COLD conditions to the Western and Southern Cape.”

BIG FREEZE for Western Cape, as -5°C forecast for this weekend

Rain, snow, wind, and now, sub-zero temperatures: The four horsemen of the cold weather apocalypse will all be present in the Western Cape this weekend, and a ‘big freeze’ is now forecast for the province on Sunday night. We sincerely hope the locals have their blankets at the ready.

A glance at the latest weather forecast for the Western Cape shows us that the mercury will plummet this weekend, and even the major urban conurbation of Cape Town will see temperatures dip into single figures. Inclement conditions will persist over the next 48 hours or so.

‘This is civil war’: SA is now just DAYS away from a National Shutdown

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is preparing to wield its enormous power later this month, by leading the proposed National Shutdown. The countrywide protest, supported by political institutions such as the EFF and PAC, threatens to bring Mzansi to its knees.

Wednesday 24 August has been scheduled as the date for mass industrial action. That’s just 12 days from now. SAFTU has over 800 000 members, and with many of these representatives expected to take part in direct strike action, South Africa will certainly find it difficult to function.

A potentially HAZARDOUS asteroid will zoom past Earth TODAY

A potentially hazardous asteroid named 2015 FF will be zipping past Earth TODAY at 33 000 kilometres per hour (km/h) TODAY.  

The giant asteroid is expected to come within 4.3 million km of Earth and has an estimated diameter of between 13 and 28 metres. Adding to its size, it will also be speeding past Earth at 33 012 km/hour, as per HT Tech.

While you may be scratching your head and wondering “what the big deal is,” especially since it’s only 4.3 million kilometres away, it’s important to note that NASA defines any space object that comes within 193 million km of Earth as a “near-Earth object” and any fast-moving object within 7.5 million km as “potentially hazardous.”

What is Enteric fever? Should you be worried?

So let’s break it up and see what exactly enteric fever is and if we should be worried. 

Typhoid fever, also called enteric fever, or simply ‘typhoid’, is a systemic illness caused by a bacterial infection with Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Typhi or serotypes Paratyphi A, B or C. In the pre-antibiotic era, typhoid carried a mortality of 5-20%.
