In the latest news in South Africa on Monday 28 February 2022, claims of South Africans treated badly while trying to flee Ukraine was confirmed.

A lot can change overnight, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday, 28 February 2022.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has confirmed earlier claims of South Africans and other Africans suffering poor treatment while trying to flee Ukraine. Dirco’s response comes after several groups of African students pleaded for help after being denied access to trains leaving Ukraine. They also claimed they were not allowed to cross the borders into both Hungary and Poland.

As the world watches on as Russia continues to invade Ukraine, Elon Musk has now entered the fray. The South African born Tesla founder and world’s richest man, received a special plea from the Ukrainian government. Musk seems to have listened and says he intends to do more. With Russia having disconnected large networks as parts of the Ukrainian internet, SpaceX satellites are now on their way.

Meanwhile, video footage has emerged from the illegal Durban street race that saw a car slam into a group of spectators on Saturday evening just before midnight. 

The community of Carolina is up in arms and planning to protest after the brutal murders of an elderly couple in the town. They were both stabbed to death in their home. 

And then the Greenhouse, a popular restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg was engulfed in flames on Saturday night, 26 February 2022.

Videos circulating on social media showed patrons running for their lives while others decided to take their phones out and capture videos amid a raging fire.

Racism? Govt confirms South Africans ‘badly treated’ while fleeing Ukraine

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation has now confirmed earlier claims of South Africans and other Africans suffering poor treatment while trying to flee Ukraine. Dirco’s response comes after several groups of African students pleaded for help after being denied access to trains leaving Ukraine. They also claimed they were not allowed to cross the borders into both Hungary and Poland.

Dirco’s Clayson Monyela, the Head of Public Diplomacy at the department, took to Twitter to confirm the issues. Monyela revealed that the South African ambassadors in Hungary and Poland have both stepped up.

“SA students & other Africans have been badly treated at the Ukraine /Poland border. Amb J Mngomezulu has driven from Warsaw (5 hours) to go deal with the matter, receive our nationals & offer further support. Amb G Tsengiwe in Hungary is also attending to South Africans on his side.”

Elon Musk to the rescue? SA born billionaire enters Ukraine battle

As the world watches on as Russia continues to invade Ukraine, Elon Musk has now entered the fray. The South African born Tesla founder and world’s richest man, received a special plea from the Ukrainian government. Musk seems to have listened and says he intends to do more. With Russia having disconnected large networks as parts of the Ukrainian internet, SpaceX satellites are now on their way.

It all started when Ukrainian Technology Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, asked Musk for help directly on Twitter.

“While you try to colonize Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations.”

So what is Starlink? Starlink is part of Musk’s space exploration company, SpaceX. Starlink is made up of a group of over 2 000 satellites that aim to provide high-speed internet access around the world.

As last week went on, Ukraine has been experiencing more and more internet disruptions. Musk and Starlink recently launched 50 new Starlink satellites.

Watch: Horrific scenes as Durban street racer crashes into spectators

South African roads are dangerous enough as it is. That’s without things like drunk drivers and a street racer putting our lives more at risk. Three people have been left injured in KwaZulu-Natal after an illegal street race went horribly wrong. Those on the side of the road watching the race ended up in the most trouble.

The incident happened at the intersection of Umgeni Road and Intersite Avenue in Durban just before midnight on Sunday morning.

According to paramedics who arrived on the scene. One person was left critically injured and had to be stabilised before being rushed to the hospital. Three people were injured in total.

Carolina community up in arms after BRUTAL murders of elderly couple [Video]

The community of the small town of Carolina in Mpumalanga is fed up with the recent spike in violent crimes and is therefore planning a protest.

A group of residents, farmers, and workers gathered outside the courthouse earlier this week when the men accused of the brutal murders made their first court appearance.

The 63-year-old Leonora Steenkamp and her life partner, 82-year-old Renier Lens were brutally attacked and stabbed to death.

WATCH: Popular Sandton restaurant, The Greenhouse ravaged by fire

The Greenhouse, a popular restaurant in Sandton, Johannesburg was engulfed in flames on Saturday night, 26 February 2022.

Videos circulating on social media showed patrons running for their lives while others decided to take their phones out and capture videos amid a raging fire. 

Emergency services said the first fire alert was received around 22:23, and two fire engines responded.

“On arrival, the fire had been extinguished, and no injuries or fatalities were reported. The cause of the fire was not investigated as the fire was extinguished by the people from the building,” EMS spokesperson, Nana Radebe said.
