A lot can change overnight, but we’ll keep you in the know with the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Monday, 1 August 2022.

Minister Bheki Cele revealed that detectives are fast-tracking biological evidence to link arrested suspects to the Krugersdorp gang rape.

Meanwhile, he also said nothing suggests that the recent shootings to rock the country over the past few weeks are coordinated and linked.

The country has reported a number of shootings, which has raised some concern. Just recently, gunmen entered a tuckshop in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and opened fire, killing at least seven people. Earlier this month, a number of people were killed in shooting incidents in taverns in Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority (KZNLA) has confirmed that the Siqhophokazi Tuckshop in Mariannhill, where seven people were killed, is unlicensed and trading liquor illegally.

The late Provincial Inspector, Makhosazana Portia Mbhele, was described as one of the finest officers stationed at Wadeville Transport Inspectorate in the Eastern Corridor.

Portia Mbhele, as she was referred to by her colleagues at the Gauteng Traffic Department, was laid to rest today, Sunday, 31 July.

In some crazy news, a box of sex toys caused an accident on the N2 on Saturday. It allegedly flew from a trailer on the vehicle in front of the car that crashed. Vibrators and other toys were left scattered on the N2.

Heavy snowfall was confirmed on Sunday on the peaks of the mountains in Barley East, on the Sani Mountain Pass, and in Lesotho.
