We’ve got the latest news stories and headlines in South Africa on Friday, 8 April.

Gosiame Sithole, the woman who claims to be the mother of the so-called Tembisa 10, has demanded that former Eyewitness News (EWN) Editor Mahlatse Mahlase and the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) apologise over utterances she says are untruthful.

The EFF lashed out at those allegedly responsible for the murder of Diepsloot resident, Elvis Nyathi, who was stoned and torched to death on Thursday. Malema said the murder of Nyathi was the consequence of endorsing and sponsoring vigilante groups by the ruling party. 

The Mpumalanga police confirmed on Thursday that it was questioning two suspects in connection with the robbery of world-renowned Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu.

And while the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is there to lend a helping hand to those stuck in a financial hole, some criminals decided their needs were more important than others as they pilfered R21m. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) revealed that over 80 arrests had been made thus far.

The SA Weather Services warned that snowfall of up to 16cm is expected this weekend in some parts of SA due to a cut-off low-pressure system.

Gosiame Sithole, the woman who claims to be the mother of the so-called Tembisa 10, has demanded that former Eyewitness News (EWN) Editor Mahlatse Mahlase and the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) apologise over utterances she says are untruthful.

Mahlase, who was also part of SANEF when the “story” broke, cited sources who claimed Sithole showed no signs of having given birth or even being pregnant. EWN reported that Sithole was medically examined by a medical team at the Thembisa Hospital, which was able to determine such, thus discrediting her claim about having birthed the decuplets.

‘Consequences of sponsoring vigilante groups’: EFF on Diepsloot murder

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the murder of Elvis Nyathi in Diepsloot, Soweto is the consequence of endorsing and sponsoring vigilante groups by the ruling party. 

On Wednesday, Diepsloot residents had blocked roads and protested about crime spiraling out of control in the area. They also accused the police of not acting.

Two questioned in connection with Esther Mahlangu robbery, assault

A pair of suspects have been taken in for questioning over their alleged involvement in the robbery and assault of acclaimed Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu.

According to SABC News, two suspects are being questioned after they followed “strong leads.”

Recently, the Mpumalanga police asked members of the public to provide information that could help the investigation and offered a R50 000 reward.

Snowfall: Flurries of up to 16cm possible in some areas this weekend

Snowfall of up to 16cm is expected in some parts of SA this weekend as a cut-off low-pressure system is expected to make landfall on Friday.

This will be the first snowfall for 2022. The SA Weather Service (SAWS) said possible snowfall is expected over the high lying areas of Lesotho, Eastern Cape, and the Drakensberg.

Stealing from the poor: Hawks arrest over 80 in R21m SASSA fraud probe

While the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) is there to lend a helping hand to those stuck in a financial hole, some criminals decided their needs were more important than others as they pilfered R21m. The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) revealed that over 80 arrests have been made thus far.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Bonnie Nxumalo says they flew into action in February when the high-profile wing of law enforcement began investigations.
