South Africa to get new 10c to R5 coins in 2023 – HAVE A LOOK

National Treasury on Tuesday, 2 May gazetted the design specifications for South Africa’s new coins, which will enter circulation later in 2023.

The gazette amends schedule 2 of the South African Reserve Bank Act, 1989, which deals with the denomination, description, composition, sizes and allowable deviations in South Africa’s circulation coins and special coins like Krugerrands.

As reported by The South African website, the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) gazetted the design, dimension and compilation of the 2023 Fourth Decimal Coin Series of South Africa, in November last year.

The new-look coins were recognised as legal tender from 1 January 2023.

The South African reported that the government would introduce a new coin series in August 2023.

Another change is that the word South Africa will be minted on one side and printed in all our official languages.

“Three languages will be used in the R5 coin; two languages R2; 50c, 20c and 10c coins and the R1 will be in one language. All these languages will be used on an annual rotational basis over the next 10 years,” read the initial statement.

As previously reported, South Africa’s current coinage – the Third Decimal Series – was introduced in 1989.

The country began minting its own coins with the First Decimal series in 1961.
