The City of Cape Town said the software for all prepaid electricity meters in the country will expire in 2024. Residents must update their meters or they will not be able to recharge with electricity and be left without power supply. The City will roll out the update in a phased manner – going area by area.

UPDATE ROLLED OUT IN PHASES

The City of Cape Town said it is making steady progress with the prepaid electricity meter software upgrade programme. More than 21 areas in the metro have been reached and around 170 000 prepaid meters have been updated with the latest software.

Residents will receive two update codes with their electricity token purchase when the City has reached their area.

The next areas affected will be Brackenfell, Kuils River, Kraaifontein, Joostenberg Vlakte and Vredekloof. Residents will be able to update their electricity meters from 1 September to 31 October 2022.

“Please give us some time to reach your area and wait until you see the codes with your purchase. Eligible customers will notice they are due for the update when they make a purchase and see the update codes. City teams will be on standby in these areas in September and October to assist customers if required,” said the City.

HOW TO UPDATE ELECTRICITY METERS

Updating is fairly simple, residents will receive two 20-digit update codes when they purchase an electricity token. Residents in areas not currently earmarked for the update will not receive the codes.

How to update your electricity meter:

1. Enter the first 20-digit update code and wait for it to accept.

2. Enter the second 20-digit update code and wait for it to accept.

3. Enter the usual 20-digit token to recharge units as normal.

If you require assistance with the update, the City can be reached via SMS at 31220, email – power@capetown.gov.za or telephone at 0860-103-089.

All electricity meters in South Africa must be updated by December 2024. The City of Cape Town has approximately 570 000 prepaid meters in total.

The City said the update codes must be entered immediately and advised residents to take a photograph of the slip or make a note of the codes because there will be no way to get a copy from a vendor. If the codes are lost, residents will have to phone the City.

All old electricity tokens must be entered before the update is completed.
