South Africa and Tanzania partner up to strengthen economic ties

The next SADC Summit will take place in Mozambique next year August.

In recent bilateral discussions, South Africa and Tanzania are joining forces to strengthen economic ties through developing trade and investment.

Tanzania and South Africa join forces for trade and investment advances

Cyril Ramaphosa has been in and out of Tanzania recently, and President John Pombe Magufuli has joined a pact with South Africa to advance economic growth and stability in the two countries.

“I firmly believe that much can still be achieved to further expand our co-operation, particularly in sectors such as energy, mining development, mineral beneficiation, economic infrastructure, tourism, agro-processing, education and healthcare.

South Africa is ready and prepared to craft a new partnership model with Tanzania, where government and business work together to clear the way for more investment to flow between our two countries.”

The Presidency ushers in advancement of public and private partnerships

Southern African Development Community (SADC) was held under the theme of: “A Conducive Business Environment for Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development”. The Summit was at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre in the Tanzanian and came to an end on Sunday, 18 August.

Ramaphosa also piloted for the advancement of the public-private sector partnerships. During the summit, he also highlighted the significance of regional economic integration, and put great emphasis on the attempts to work towards the advancement of economic integration as predicted by the SADC Industrialisation Strategy.

The South African A-Team came out to play

The Presidency brought its’ A-team to the deliberations, consisting of Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Naledi Pandor; the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula; Minister of Tourism, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi Ngubane and Minister of Finance, Mr Tito Mboweni.

“SADC remains a key component of South African foreign policy which aims to promote economic integration among its Member States. As well as to achieve sustainable development, allowing the region to address the key challenges of unemployment and poverty alleviation. Regional integration plays an important role, both politically and economically in terms of reducing the risk of regional conflicts. It further relates to pooling resources and markets for achieving economies of scale.”

In addition to English, French and Portuguese, the Tanzanian President Magafuli introduced Kiswahili as the 4th official language of communication of the summit. The next SADC Summit will take place in Maputo, Mozambique in August 2020.
