The Afriski Mountain Resort has transformed into a winter wonderland over the weekend, with 20cm of snow having been recorded in Lesotho. Snow seekers have been treated to dream conditions this year, with this the third reported snowfall in the space of two months.

Guests have also been left with no choice but to make the most of the extraordinary conditions for the meantime though, as all roads to and from the Afriski resort have been temporarily closed due to the adverse driving conditions.

Snow falls abundantly in Lesotho

Afriski said that snow has been falling abundantly since Friday and has continued into Sunday morning. Stunning footage of the snow has been posted to the Resort’s social media pages, with guests taking full advantage of the cold snap.

Afriski roads closed for now

With driving conditions less than ideal, Afriski issued an update on road accessibility for Sunday, saying that motorists must refrain from trying to access the resort until further notice.

“Roads are closed to all vehicles. Please do not attempt to drive up. We will continuously update the road conditions on social media platforms,” they said in an update.

road conditions remain precarious

The  South African Weather Services (SAWS) had issued warnings for snowfall over the high lying areas of the Eastern Cape, the extreme western and south-western high ground of KZN (Drakensberg areas), and the extreme eastern parts of the Free State on Thursday 12 August.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Sipho Hlomuka, placed the province’s disaster management teams on alert in anticipation of snowfall for the weekend, saying that extreme caution should be exercised on the roads.

These weather conditions may affect road conditions and the flow of traffic, causing congestion and delays, and the possible closure of sections of the N3 Toll Route in the interest of safety, he said.
