Police said a lone gunman caused mayhem on Saturday as he randomly opened fire in a busy street in Kagiso where a wedding was being celebrated.
The gunman killed six people and injured four others in his path of destruction.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said the police in Gauteng can, at this stage can confirm a shooting incident that left six people dead, four men and two women in Kagiso, West Rand District.
She said three men and one woman were injured.
“It is reported that a lone gunman entered a house and shot the owner and his girlfriend as well as a neighbour.
“On the suspect’s way out, he is alleged to have continued to shoot randomly. The street was busy as there was a wedding celebration nearby.”
Muridili said two more people were certified dead on the scene, and two were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
“The police will register a case of murder and attempted murder.”
Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, police arrested two men for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said the Ekurhuleni Municipality Police Department was conducting patrols in Zone 4 when they spotted a suspicious-looking vehicle with two occupants inside.
“They immediately stopped and searched the vehicle and the two occupants. A 9mm pistol with a filed-off serial number was found loaded with live rounds.”
He said the duo aged 27 and 32 years were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
“The firearm will be subjected to a ballistic examination to determine whether or not it was used in the commission of any other crimes.”
The suspects are expected to appear in Palmridge court soon.
