False Bay was a scene of natural beauty on Thursday when a well-known group of orcas were spotted by the Simon’s Town Boat Company. Amongst them was Port, the shark killer.

Where were the orcas spotted?

The boat company sent Facebook into a plethora of heart and bulging heart-eyed emojis when they released stunning photos of the beloved visitors.

The orcas approached the shores in a group of ten, including two newly-born members. The orcas spent about 20 minutes on the surface of the ocean, intimidating some Bryde whales, who would’ve been a meal for the group on any other day.

However. as amazing as it may have been to see the orcas, the people who gathered in groups to watch this amazing moment, as well as the Simon’s Town Boat Company, were paying close attention to the orcas’ fins.

It did not take long for everyone to recognise a possible sighting of Port, the notorious co-conspirator of the great white shark killing spree that almost toppled the city’s shark cage diving industry.

A brief history on why Port is infamous in South Africa

Port was suspected to have led the group of orcas who swept four great white sharks away between May and June last year.

Scientists in the country battled with the idea of how these intelligent sea creatures could’ve neatly removed the liver of one of the sharks with its body still intact.

Identified by his collapsed dorsal fin, Port and co. seemed nonchalant about being in the presence of so much food.

It seemed to have been a little chaperoning escapade onto the surface for the little debutants, and while there were tensions with the animals expected to act on their predatorial instincts, it was an amazing experience all around.
