Shooting Latest: Pinetown motorist found shot and killed

A Pinetown motorist was shot and killed in near the CBD area on Tuesday in what may have been a botched hijacking.

Emer-G-Med paramedics spokesperson Kyle Van Reenen said that paramedics had responded to the seen of the shooting in Bamboo lane at around 3pm in the afternoon.

“On arrival on scene a male, believed to be approximately thirty years of age, was found lying next to his motor vehicle, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds,” Van Reenen said.

“Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do to assist him and he was declared deceased on arrival,” he said.

Van Reenen added that the  motive for the shooting and the events preceeding it were unclear at this stage and would form the subject of a South African Police Services investigation.

Famous for being South Africa’s previous murder capital, Nyanga in the Western Cape has now gained a new title. According to a table of local police reports, it is now the ‘top hijacking hot-spot’ in the country. Nyanga has seen cases rise by almost 30% in the past 12 months.

Nyanga has had more hijacking incidents than other part of SA over the last quarter. A total of 107 of these crimes were committed in January 2021, beating Loate (Gauteng) and Umlazi (KZN) to the top of table. Harare and Tembisa are also in the top five hijacking hotspots.

Both the Western Cape and Gauteng have four stations in the top ten, ably supported by two from KZN. Only one other province has a station in the top 30 list, and that’s Vosman in Mpumalanga.
