The ruthless murder of Shongile Nkhwashu, and the brazen nature of it, has stunned many South Africans.

Shongile Nkhwashu becomes another victim of GBV

Shongile Nkhwashu was a 24-year-old medical intern at the Mankweng Hospital, east of Polokwane, Limpopo. She was two weeks into her internship and was buzzing from the prospects of becoming a doctor in the foreseeable future.

According to a statement released by the Limpopo Department of Health, Shongile Nkhwashu lived at the hospital’s residence for doctors, where she was last seen alive.

On Sunday evening, a foul smell pervading from her room was reported by a visitor. Colleagues tried to gain access, but the door was locked and no response was heard from the medical intern.

The police were called in and upon forcing their way into the room, the decomposing body of Shongile Nkhwashu was discovered. In a statement, police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo noted that the 24-year-old “was found lying on her bed, already in the early stage of decomposition.”

It was discovered, through visitation registers and camera footage, that the intern’s romantic partner, a 25-year-old male, was the last person to see her alive.

“The police immediately commenced with investigations and the suspect, who is believed to be the deceased’s boyfriend, was traced and arrested in Giyani,” the statement read.

Mojapelo revealed that he was immediately considered as the prime suspect in the murder investigation and he was subsequently tracked down to a location in Giyani, a city in Limpopo located 130km from Mankweng Hospital.

Boyfriend allegedly confesses to the murder

The suspect, whose identity has not been made public, allegedly confessed to the murder, Mojapelo claims, The motive behind the murder has not yet been revealed, and the 25-year-old is expected to submit a guilty plea when he appears before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court this week.

Tributes have been pouring in from all corners of the country with people calling for the maximum punishment possible.
