A well-known KZN resident was killed after he jumped from a moving taxi on Wednesday morning.

THE WELL-KNOWN KZN RESIDENT WAS DECLARED DEAD ON THE SCENE

According to Reaction Unit SA (RUSA) spokesperson Prem Balram, the incident happened around 06:07.

“The 40-year-old Shalen Panday, popularly known as PJ, was killed after he jumped from an out-of-control taxi that experienced brake failure on Softwood Crescent in Trenance Park – KZN this morning.”

Balram said residents contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) at approximately 06:07 after the Toyota Hiace taxi crashed into a metal barrier.

“On arrival, Panday was found lying on the road bleeding excessively from an injury to his head. He was declared deceased by paramedics from a private ambulance service.”

‘THE BRAKES OF THE MINIBUS FAILED’

Balram furthermore said it was established that the brakes on the minibus failed when Panday opened the sliding door and attempted to jump to safety; however, he struck the metal barrier with his head.

“The driver informed Reaction Officers that he advised Panday not to jump as he attempted to bring the vehicle to a stop. The conductor fled the scene following the accident.”

He said Panday was employed as a bus driver at Seven Tours.
