R800k ransom demanded for Shanawaaz Asghar’s safe return

An R800 000 ransom was reportedly demanded for Shanawaaz Asghar’s safe return. It is not clear whether his family paid it all.

Shanawaaz Asghar’s family reportedly had to pay a ransom for the kidnapped child’s safe return. 

The six-year-old boy was snatched by armed suspects on 4th Avenue in Kensington, Cape Town on Wednesday, 17 August. He was reunited with his family on Thursday night. 

RANSOM ALLEGEDLY DEMANDED FOR SHANAWAAZ’S RETURN

As previously reported, the armed suspects kidnapped the child using two Volkswagen Polo`s, colour silver and white. He was reportedly wearing a navy tracksuit top, grey pants and black shoes. This is the same clothing he is wearing in a photograph that was circulating on social media.

According to reports, the Grade R pupil’s family received a ransom request of R800 000 for his safe release. It is not yet clear whether the family paid the entire amount to the kidnappers.

It has also been reported that police were able to trace the kidnappers through the cellphone they allegedly contacted Shanaawaz’s mother with while demanding the ransom. 

According to TimesLive, the suspects linked to the kidnapping were allegedly involved in another kidnapping in Gauteng. The group had reportedly used the same cellphone used to contact the Asghar family in an earlier kidnapping.

Family spokesperson, Dawood Esack confirmed that Shanawaaz Asghar was reunited with his family on Thursday night and that he is mentally and physically fine.
