No less than seven lives have been tragically lost in an N1 collision near Mokopane, Limpopo’s Department of Transport and Community Safety confirmed on Monday 1 November.

MINIBUS AND SEDAN INVOLVED IN N1 COLLISION NEAR MOKOPANE

The fatal crash happened between a VW kombi and a Hyundai Sedan. The Kombi, which has Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) branding, only had the driver in it, while the sedan carried six occupants.

“Seven people were killed in a head-on collision between a VW kombi and a Hyundai Sedan on the N1 South next to Oorlogfontein outside Mokopane,” the report said.

“It is suspected that one of the drivers lost control of the vehicle and drove into on-coming traffic. Six were in the Sedan and the Kombi driver was alone in the vehicle.”

ROAD DEATHS CLIMB TO 15 IN FOUR DAYS

The department further revealed that the past weekend was an unnerving period for South African road safety.

“This brings to 15 the number of people who have been killed on the provincial roads since Friday. Motorists are advised to drive with caution and reduce speed.”

Limpopo’s Member of the Executive Council for transport and community safety offered words of comfort or sympathy to the bereaved.

“MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the families of the deceased.”

In related road fatality news, five children were among the 11 people injured in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of four people in Pretoria. Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said that the driver of an SUV had lost control of his vehicle, which then rolled down an embankment, ejecting 15 occupants before it came to a standstill on a property near the freeway.
