Seven people who have been convicted for public violence have been sentenced for their role in a protest by the Dudula movement in Alexandra.

Gauteng police have welcomed the sentencing which was handed down by Alexandra Magistrate’s Court earlier this month.

SENTENCE INCLUDES SOME TIME IN JAIL

All seven suspects were found guilty and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment. Five of the seven years’ are wholly suspended.

But this is on condition that they are not convicted of public violence during the suspension period, said police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello.

“One of the accused, Simon Motaung was identified as the leader of the movement.”

The seven were arrested on 29 May during a protest led by the Dudula movement in Alexandra.

TimesLive reported that the Dudula movement had evicted an elderly woman from her home. But residents instead resisted and retaliated.

The group allegedly went to the homes of residents opposed to the eviction.

Dudula members allegedly shot at the community and the community fought back in retaliation. This left nine people injured.

The movement is different from Operation Dudula which is led by Nhlanhla Lux.

COMMUNITY RESIST MOVEMENT

Alexandra residents had last month allegedly assaulted and attempted to necklace a 40-year-old woman. The community accused her of being a member of the Dudula movement and suspected her of terrorising residents.

In a video that made the rounds on social media, the woman can be seen with two tyres stuffed with boxes around the woman’s neck.

The woman is heard pleading with the crowd, assuring them that she is no longer a member of Dudula.

But she was arrested anyway for her involvement with the movement, police confirmed. The woman faces charges of malicious damage to property and public violence.
