The South African Police Service has stepped in to disperse crowds of protestors in the Setshwetla Informal Settlement after roads were blocked with burning tyres and debris.

Setshwetla brought to a standstill

Johannesburg Metro chief of police David Tembe has advised anyone traveling in the area to exercise extreme caution.

The stand-off between police and protestors has become very tense, according to Tembe, and the police have engaged in crowd control with rubber bullets and pepper spray.

Informal settlement blockaded

Earlier he reported that the entire settlement had effectively been cut off after roads were barricaded by burning tyres and debris.

In addition to the blockade, an electrical box was petrol bombed by protestors.
