State witness, Tumelo Madlala is expected to continue testifying at the trial of the five men accused of murdering former Bafana Bafana captain and his friend, Senzo Meyiwa at the North Gauteng High Court.

On Tuesday, 13 September proceedings had to be halted and also adjourned early as Madlala got emotional as he he recalled what happened on the day he last saw his best friend alive.

The five men who are currently on trial for the murder of Meyiwa who are Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Ntanzi, Mthobisi Ncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Fisokuhle Ntuli were arrested in 2020. They all pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Court proceedings normally start at 10:00 and adjourn at 11:15 for a tea break. They resume again at 11:30 and adjourn again at 13:00 for lunch and resume at 14:00. However, due to unforeseen circumstances on a particular day there are delays and sometimes court adjourns for either tea or lunch earlier than the set times indicated above.

So far, three State witnesses have taken to the stand in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. The first two were police officers Sergeant Thabo Mosia and Sergeant Patrick Mthethwa who both had junior ranks when the incident happened.

Senzo Meyiwa’s older sister Nomalanga who has been in court this week after a long while said as a family they were hopeful that her brother’s best friends would tell them the truth about what really transpired the night he was shot dead.

“When we heard that Senzo’s close friends whom we also treated as brothers were present, we thought it wouldn’t take such a long time for us to find out what happened that night. We thought they would tell us the truth about what happened and who shot Senzo,” she said

Sister of accused 4, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, Sinqobile, was also in court and said they are hoping for the best as Tumelo is on the witness stand.

“We are hoping that he (Tumelo) as Senzo’s close friend he will do what is best for his friend. If he indeed was a true one he will tell the whole truth of what happened that night,” she said.
