There was drama at the North Gauteng High Court on Thursday morning before proceedings in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial could even start as former defence lawyer for accused 1 -4 Advocate Malesela Teffo walked in robed and demanded to see Presiding Judge, Tshifhiwa Maumela.

It wasn’t immediately clear what Adv Teffo who quit earlier this year had come to do as he walked around in court.

Court proceedings were delayed after Teffo showed up in court. The advocate held a discussion with both the defence lawyers and the State prosecutor who were seemingly confused and questioned his presence. In the midst of all the confusion heavy police presence entered the court and followed Teffo has he headed towards the judge’s chambers.

Defence lawyer for accused 5, Advocate Zandile Mshololo said Teffo approached all the other counsel and asked for them to go and see Judge Maumela together.

“He wanted to see you (Judge Maumela) by force, he said we cannot proceed without him seeing the judge,” Mshololo said.

“We told him that at least he should send his request via email but he refused and said if we don’t want to go with him to see the Judge he will go on his own,” she added.

State Prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi said the matter was reportedly regarding Teffo being on watch brief for Vosloorus Cas 375/01/2019 which implicates Kelly Khumalo and others who were present when Meyiwa was shot.

Adv Teffo was arrested in April this yearin the same court shortly after proceedings had adjourned.

During his arrest, Teffo said he ‘did not know’ why he was being arrested, and claimed that he had not been read his rights at the time.

He also alleged that Police Minister, Bheki Cele and others in power were against him working on the Meyiwa murder case and want him to be arrested, however, Cele disputed this and said he did not even know about the arrest.
