Senzo Meyiwa: Family is let down by NPA, considering AfriForum

The family of Senzo Meyiwa has expressed their disappointment in the way that the investigation into his murder — particularly the prosecutorial aspect of it — has been handled.

A recap on what happened to Senzo Meyiwa

In 2014, South Africa’s footballing community was rocked by the death of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa.

The incident occurred at popular singer, Kelly Khumalo’s residence. Suspects allegedly entered the premises and held Khumalo and Meyiwa at gunpoint with the intent to rob the couple.

At some point in the altercation, Meyiwa suffered fatal gunshot wounds. Khumalo somehow managed to survive the incident without harm.

However, she has not been able to assist in identifying the suspects in a mysterious murder that has dragged on for years.

How far is the investigation?

As the year draws to a close, Police Minister, Bheki Cele’s promise of cracking the murder mystery before 2020 seems more like a baseless utterance at this stage.

He had even sworn that the cold case would be cracked and solved before Christmas. Well, we are exactly two months away from the holiday and investigators have yet to announce a single arrest.

The last breakthrough police made was four months ago. It was revealed then that at least four suspects were set to be charged for their alleged involvement, in the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.

It was believed that lie detector tests had indicated that the suspects were deceitful in their version of what had taken place on that fateful day.

The only information that was released at the time, was that three were well-known personalities and the other suspect was ‘a top-cop’.

Meyiwa family’s ultimatum to Ramaphosa and Cele

However, as Meyiwa’s brother, Sifiso, told reporters, on Friday, that breakthrough ended up on the desk of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and has not moved since.

According to Sifiso, the SAPS detectives assigned to this case have done the work. The matter now rests with the NPA. However, in his view, the prosecuting authority has not exercised any urgency in handling the matter.

“Thre’s no problem in the SAPS because the SAPS has done everything. The problem is with NPA. NPA is the one giving us problems.

“We are calling on the president and the Minister of Police to intervene and find out why they can’t prosecute this case or else AfriForum will take over. And I have contacted them and they are willing to help,” he said.

At this time, the lobby group has not made any official statement expressing interest in pursuing the case.
