Another security officer shot in Hammarsdale, KZN, are they under attack?

There is an increasing spate of attacks on security officers in KZN. Another security officer was shot on Tuesday morning by known gunmen.

A security officer has been shot twice by an unknown group of men on Sibis Road in Hammarsdale, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Tuesday. 

The security officer was shot twice in both lower limbs by men walking past the school he was guarding. This incident follows a spate of pothers recently where security and police officers have been attacked in the province.


Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst said when medics arrived on scene, they found that the patient, a 32-year-old male, had sustained moderate injuries.

“The patient was treated on scene by Netcare 911 emergency care practitioners and once stabilised was flown by Netcare 911 helicopter ambulance to hospital for further care.

“According to the guard, the assailants fled back into the bush following the shooting.”

On 5 May, a security officer was killed in a hail of bullets in Besters, KwaMashu. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), the deceased was in the process of boarding a mini bus taxi when he was approached by a man who shot him at least ten times. The gunman fled without stealing anything.

In the same week the incident above was reported, three separate incidents of security officers being attacked in parts of KZN were also reported.

In February this year, a security officer was killed whilst another was airlifted in a critical condition following a shooting incident in Umlazi, south of Durban. The 41-year-old security officer was left in a critical condition following an alleged cash in transit heist. He succumbed to his gunshot wounds in hospital.  

In February again, a 58-year-old Response Officer from Eagle Eye Security was shot and killed during a robbery in Gwalas Farm, Tongaat.

In April, another incident was reported where an officer guarding a construction company at the Hazelmere Dam wall in Cottonlands was also shot & robbed.

On 5 May, 52-year-old Warrant Officer Michael Jameson who was off-duty was also shot and killed after he responded to a hijacking in Umbilo, Durban. Jameson was picking up his daughter from a school in Umbilo when he noticed a hijacking in progress.
