With the new year now well under way, preparations have begun in earnest for schools to reopen around the country – as early as next week.

The Department of Basic Education has published the 2023 school calendar which begins on Wednesday, 11 January 2023 for learners at inland schools, while coastal schools will start a week later on Wednesday, 18 January.
According to BusinessTech, the 2023 school year will comprise 199 school days across the four terms, with 32 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.

As always, teachers will begin the year earlier, starting up from 9 January (inland) and 16 January (coastal) in preparation for pupils to return.
To note: Inland provinces are the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, while the coastal provinces are the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.

Meanwhile, the matric class of 2022 will need to wait a little longer until their results are published.
Education minister Angie Motshekga announced this week that the matric results for the class of 2022 will be announced on 19 January 2023, and distributed by schools on 20 January.
